Batman: Gotham by Gaslight

If it wasn't for an unfortunate script decision that sends a message of all things bat-like somewhere off into the sewer system at the very end (by which, among other things, it definitively deviates from the already quite different original), I would let myself be completely absorbed by the beloved Victorian atmosphere, even if it is not fully exploited here. However, the last twenty minutes swiftly wash away my previous impressions and cruelly extinguish the entire magic of gas lamps with an almost cruel swiftness. (27/02/2018)

Gotham by Gaslight is definitely a breath of fresh air after a decade of DC adult animation. The first comic in the "Elseworlds" series in 1991 was one of Mike Mignola's last works before "Hellboy". And Victorian Batman/Jack the Ripper is still one of the best things to come out of that decade. I'd still appreciate an adaptation of "Amazonia,", a similar Victorian comic featuring Wonder Woman, and then I would be completely satisfied. (16/04/2019)

I’m quite interested in the original comic book, which unfortunately hasn't been published in Czech and I'm not sure it will be. It has charm in its animation, and even though it's just an alternative to Batman, it's watchable and has a pretty good story, which is very much due to how different the familiar characters are here.
