German is a young artist and filmmaker striving to complete his first feature film, while plagued by the ghost of a long-lost love and a battle for creative control with his producers. Harkening back to self reflexive films like Billy Wilder's Sunset Blvd., the film industry obviously enjoys watching itself on the big screen. Simply put, Josh Polon's MexMan is a doc about making your mark in the film industry post film school. A cautionary tale of sorts, this doc is a portrait of Alonso and his personal struggles as he attempts to make his first narrative feature. After meeting renowned Hollywood producer Moctesuma Esparza, German Alonso is tasked with making a proof of concept. This film further highlights challenges often faced by filmmakers who hail from working class backgrounds. As a first generation Mexican American filmmaker myself, it was really endearing to see German's friends and parents help him on set. I couldn't help but think of my friends and father helping me. MexMan is a supremely engaging roller coaster of an experience. (Slamdance Film Festival)
