Newlywed Elizabeth (Abbey Lee) arrives with her brilliant scientist husband Henry (Ciaran Hinds) to his magnificent estate, where he wows her with lavish dinners and a dazzling tour of the property. The house staff Claire (Carla Gugino) and Oliver (Matthew Beard) treat her deferentially but she can’t shake the feeling something is off. Henry explains that everything in his world now belongs to her, all is for her to play in - all except for a locked-off room he forbids her from entering. When he goes away for business Elizabeth decides to investigate and finds she may not be who she thinks she is at all. (South by Southwest Film Festival)

English This movie’s captivating focus on double femme-fatalism and the magnificent interiors of a modern designer home works better than the storyline that plays at surprising revelations and hints (but indeed only hints!) of Blade Runner-like themes of android identity (or clone identity in this case). Even Almodóvar’s self-indulgent The Skin I Live In was incomparably denser in terms of content and more meaningful. But as something that looks nice and that you watch once just for fun – if you see it on the big screen – it’s not bad. Praise for good use of the face (and body) of Abbey Lee, otherwise known only from minor roles as a model (The Neon Demon). [Sitges FF] ()
