In 1943, legendary Hollywood director William Wyler crafted Memphis Belle, a celebrated tribute to the titular WWII bomber. Using footage Wyler shot from the National Archives, director Erik Nelson has made a new film, featuring gripping narration from some of the last surviving B-17 pilots. A meditation on youth, war and stunning bravery. (AFI Docs)

English The footage is... amazing... breathtaking... and when the pilots talk about how beautiful it was to see the condensation trails behind their bombers, you believe them, despite knowing where the planes are headed, what the crews are up to, and what the tons of bombs they're carrying will do. It's certainly impressive. Too bad the documentary is so, shall we say, scattered, disorganized. One minute there's a chapter about the takeoff of a huge number of planes, the next a chapter about their mechanics, then we're back in the air, then we're back on the ground, then we're back in the air... I was distracted. ()
