Since the French Revolution, the Maréchal family has run one of the most successful vineyards in Burgundy. But lately the vineyard has struggled to make itself pay as its present owner François Maréchal has no longer any interest in wine production. His son, Charles, left the region some years ago to pursue a successful career as a wine critic in Paris. With his father now facing bankruptcy, Charles returns to Burgundy with the intention of taking over the running of the family business. By using traditional methods of wine production, Charles is confident he will succeed where his father failed, although the weather is not on his side and he soon realises that making wine for a living is far harder than tasting it.
