HBO limited drama series that tells the darkly comedic story of three northern-California mothers whose seemingly perfect lives unravel to the point of murder. In addition to Reese Witherspoon as Madeline, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley, the cast includes Alexander Skarsgård as Perry, Celeste's handsome yet volatile husband; Laura Dern as Renata Klein, a high-powered career mom; Adam Scott as Ed, Madeline's current husband; James Tupper as Nathan, Madeline's ex; Zoe Kravitz as Bonnie, Nathan's new wife; and Kathryn Newton as Abigail, Madeline's teenaged daughter. After a shaky start, the story started unfolding in an interesting way, the authors provided more and more insight into all the main characters. I ended up having a surprisingly good time. 4*+ ()
A very pleasant surprise. I already perked up at the announcement of David E. Kelley's collaboration with Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. After a while, I wasn't too happy with the "another HBO series" label, but I did enjoy Big Little Lies the second time around. There's no need to form an opinion about it beforehand. The series is a classic take on the idea of quality television production with actresses who bring great acting experience to the domestic small screen. Nothing more, nothing less. ()
