Ulysses and his friends are navigating the strange and often bewildering city of Los Angeles, oscillating between earnest relationship discussions and surreal sexual adventures. Haunted by recurring nightmares that he believes are indicative of a vast conspiracy, Ulysses is struggling to find his purpose in LA and obsessing over tracking down an elusive dating-app match with whom he shared a seemingly otherworldly hookup. He is grounded by his longtime friendship with Ford, a beefcake screenwriter who is dating Severine, a sexually voracious astrobiological theorist. Rounding out their squad is Carly, an aspiring actress and covert cam-girl whose relationship with her boyfriend finally sparks when they start to explore BDSM. (Sundance Film Festival)

In addition to comedy, Now Apocalypse should have featured other genres or genre hybrids, like mystery sci-fi and romantic drama, though it's both a fact and a shame that neither of these categories work properly. The series depicts a number of explicitly sexual scenes that often have a wannabe humorous backdrop and interfere in various ways with the relationships between the characters, whose behaviour at times struck me as totally bonkers – I was most annoyed by the naive, whiny Ford and the incomprehensibly self-centered Jethro. Apart from the relationship line, I had perhaps too high expectations because of the alien plot, which practically disappeared in the middle of the series, only to reappear in a brief form at the very end. The idea was not bad, but everything kind of fizzled out during its execution.
