Jack Nicholson directs and stars as a downtrodden outlaw who finds a loophole that lets him evade the gallows by slipping a wedding ring on a lonely spinster (Mary Steenburgen). English Jack shines and takes the film all to himself, filling with his smile every loophole in an insanely naive script, whose biggest advantage is the great insight and good mood that radiates from every shot. It takes a lot of courage to combine western, comedy and romance into one work, and the final impression is very specific and uneven. At times, it’s a brisk movie full of effective humour, but also a bit of a ramble about two completely different people coming together. In the end, however, it’s a very enjoyable and funny comedy, which, although Nicholson's inexperience as a director contributes to it, is at the same time incredibly enriched by his acting mastery...
