Director Justin Pemberton has adapted the eponymous best-seller by French economist Thomas Piketty, which leads the reader in seven-league boots through the history of society, which for Piketty is the history of inequality. Flanked by interviews with economists, finance experts and historians, he broadly sketches the relationship between rich and poor, from feudalism via the French revolution, colonialism and economic crises to the present day – and beyond. The film doesn’t only present the facts, it links them to numerous pop-culture references - from Wall Street to the Simpsons. (Filmfest Hamburg)
