Rigby Reardon (Steve Martin) is a down on his luck private investigator hired by Juliet Forrest (Rachel Ward) to investigate the suspicious death of her father, a noted scientist and cheesemaker. When Reardon acquires a list of names of 'the friends and enemies of Carlotta', he begins to encounter many sinister individuals in his search for answers. Thanks to cleverly edited clips from some of Hollywood's classic noir films, these suspicious characters are portrayed by such revered stars as Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart and Burt Lancaster. A wonderful tour de force. At first I was a bit worried if I would mind that I hadn't seen all the quoted noirs... But it didn't matter. Not in the slightest. Steve Martin was excellent, so was Rachel Ward, and the way the director connected his film to other people's is without a single flaw. "If you want me to investigate your father's death, I'll get $10 a day. Plus expenses." - "Will $200 up front be enough, Mr. Reardon?" - "For $200, I'll shoot my grandmother." - "That won't be necessary." - "You never know. In the last case, I had to throw my own brother from a plane. You’re crazy."
