The Botero family's luck has changed. The father has died and his funeral is a foresight of what is in store for them: poverty. The widow, Doña Ignacia, has to take harsh steps. Firstly, she throws Guama, her eldest and unscrupulous son, out of the house. The she takes Mireya out of school and makes her start sewing. Thirdly, they move out into a miserable loft. She decides to put all her hopes on the youngest child, Gabriel, who is good-looking and intelligent. In order to pay for his going to university, she sends Nicolas, her other son, to work in Veracruz. The brothers and sisters all find themselves in unpleasant situations due to their mother's decision. However, Gabriel doesn't behave as everyone has expected him to. (Alameda Films)
