In Mother Tongue the director observes his own family in Montreal, Quebec. His wife Patricia is Canadian and is a native of Quebec. Derek emigrated from Great Britain at the age of 18. They discuss the problems they confront in their marriage. Foremost, the choice of the French or English language, which is in turn reflected in the political and social problems of multi-ingual Quebec. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
