This story follows Billy, a young boy left on his own in the streets of New York City, on his journey to one of the "orphan trains" that took homeless children out of the streets and put them where families had the need for an extra hand. He is taken in by a family who had lost a son of their own. They must learn that he is not their deceased son and Billy must learn to live with rules and the hard work of farm life.
