World war II, Captain Armitage (Clive Brook) is returning home after a long tour of duty with his crew aboard the Flagship. Upon reaching port, the captain is delivered new orders, he and his crew must set an urgent course to intercept and escort a fleet of merchant men to England. A dashing young officer joins the captain's ship, but this troublesome addition to an already difficult situation turns out to be the man that destroyed the captain's marriage by running away with his wife. When one ship fails to join the convoy Captain Armitage is faced with a terrible conflict between natural feeling and duty, when he realises the ship, which is being threatened by the Nazis carries his ex-wife amongst its passengers.
