Poor saleswoman Helena accepts a ticket to the theatre from a man she does not know, who had one to spare after a row with his fiancée Eva. He is a millionaire called Jára Nerad, and Helena pretends to him that she is rich too. The next day he happens to come into the shop where she works and the truth comes out. But Jára does not mind and the two people start going out together. Helena lives in a women's hostel with her friend Miluška. Miluška is the object of the affection of the shy owner of a car repair shop, Karel. Helena arranges for them to meet and the two young couples go on an outing together in a motor car. Nerad's mother, however, wants to see her son married to the wealthy Eva and so she pretends to Jára that the family has lost its fortune through a slump in share prices. Jára agrees to marry Eva to save his father from bankruptcy. Confusion is caused by Jára's uncle Ferdinand who, unawares, takes Helena to the wedding banquet. Eva insults Helena, whereupon Jára immediately terminates the marriage. The director of the women's hostel can now arrange for a double wedding: those of Helena and Jára, and Miluška and Karel.
