Alex Whittaker and three other gifted psychics are investigating rumors that the secret of life has been discovered by master puppeteer Andre Toulon. But the psychics quickly discover Toulon's secret of death in the form of five killer puppets - each one uniquely qualified for murder and mayhem. Tunneler has a nasty habit of boring holes in people with his drill bit head. Ms. Leech regurgitates killer leaches that suck her victims dry. Pinhead strangles his enemies with his powerful vice-like hands. Blade has a gleaming hook for one hand and a razor-sharp knife for the other. One is sometimes amazed what "gem" can become a start of a huge franchize (to this day, the Puppet Master has twelve sequels). This first installment, with its simplicity and schlock, has very little to offer to the audience, perhaps just setting-up a sketching out of the Puppet Master mythology, which in this movie does not have any significant purpose at all. Puppet Master is very slowly paced, has incompetent directing, and there is only a scant amount of terror generated from the puppets. I have to admit that I expected something a little different from this "cult" movie. [Sitges 2019]
