Cpt. Exner - Osamělý mrtvý muž – 1. část (2017) (episode)

English The Cpt. Exner series is a long-standing debt to the original Barrandov detective film The Treasure of the Byzantine Merchant, in which the hero of Václav Erben's original Czech detective stories first appeared. Debt, you ask? Yes, you read that correctly. During the normalization period, two more films were made for television and two more for movie theaters. Exner was never played by Vala again, and every single project started from scratch with its own Exner. It’s not an ideal calling card for an adaptation of a consistent series that has become a favorite among readers over the years. I, therefore, find this Prima series to be a nice idea. Unfortunately, each case split into two dilutes the pace of the investigation, which a large portion of the audience doesn't view with enthusiasm. However, there's so much more room to build a confident story between Exner (the sexy Dlouhý) and his Exner Girl (the sexy Kerekes, who is fabulously tongue-tied). Again, this is the motif that I searched for in vain in the normalization films, when the chemistry between Vala and Gabi Vránová started so successfully. Well, it's exactly, but I accept this debt with open arms and I look forward, maybe in the future, that some of the domestic TV stations will download it for other domestic investigators, because there really is a lot to draw from.

Private Traps - V síti (2011) (episode)

English A rather depressing story to end on. The abridged second season charts revenge, courage, responsibility, and obsession. Our favorite Kryštof Hádek plays an absolutely excellent insidious introvert. Plesl and Vyorálek are good partners for him. Hana Maciuchová also shone here in miniature, playing the role in just three scenes as if she had the whole film to play it. It's not advisable to become an object of interest for someone even from the IT department ;) Be careful.

Private Traps - Útěk (2011) (episode)

English There's rarely a chance I won't give up on something where Dyk and Mádl are found side by side. Yet surprisingly, this story of Private Traps is one of the better ones. The realistically sketched drama between the fundamental questions of life deals with the usual life search and naming of one's place in the sun. Two ways of experiencing life are offered by two girls, each logically different. But both are pretty, young, and loving, so both would be worth considering. By controlling fate for a time, the one who thinks more conventionally will win, but the young artist, although he represents an artist who is not bohemian but responsible, needs a half of an open mind, with a passion for art, not bound by material certainties. It is good to know that such a mature balance can be observed even in the context of a purely commercial television production.

Private Traps - Manželství nebo život (2011) (episode)

English Unfortunately, this is too much of a theatrically anchored narrative about the failure of a single marriage. Why the framing of an unrealistic trust in a beauty salon? Moreover, in a beauty salon that is absurdly situated in the most attractive part of Prague's Lucerna Palace. Tereza Kostková tells and instructs beauticians on how walk away from a marriage that only drains you. There’s no surprising twist, just an illustration of a popular story that was already far too old. But of course, her eyes were opened by her idealized new counterpart and she automatically became beautiful in a moment of understanding (= the make-up artist chose evening make-up for the daily routine as well). Boring.

Private Traps - Nezabiješ (2011) (episode)

English A seemingly banal and linear story about a father and his six-year-old daughter who lost their wife and mother. Her death was one of the most unnecessary, justice was not served for her, so the desire for revenge logically followed. A surprising twist and realistic emotions - in short, a very good opener for Season 2. The story is adorned with the then little-known actresses Holišová and Málková, and Langmajer and the tiny Anna Sikora make a good match. The honest relationship between father and daughter is chilling because watching them in their situation is really not easy.

The Death of a Talented Cobbler (1982)

English After two weak Erben projects from the 70s, there was a new chance to resurrect the popular captain Exner, this time wearing the face of Jiří Kodet. After Vala from the 1960s, a very interesting choice. Kodet is cuddly to women, he knows how to wear a jacket, and even his heel is always neat. Jan Schmidt's script is not awkward... but it lacks something in order to be perfect. It needed a more refined Exner Girl - after all, Jana Boušková has always been a useful actress, but not a sexy idiot. Yet it's a watchable Barrandov crime drama of the 1980s, where it's especially unfortunate that it wasn't written out for the entire free cycle. What followed, again unfortunately on television, was again a disaster.

The War of the Roses (1989)

English Danny DeVito as a director is a rather grim auteur. His films are exclusively aggressive beyond believability, and while I understand that the Douglas and Turner pairing was popular, I can imagine the same story retold by someone else being much more successful. Moreover, I don't notice myself having any interest in reading Warren Adler's original book or its sequel, which is quite the calling card in and of itself.

Čas pracuje pro vraha (1979)

English A somewhat unfortunate solution to another Erben project with Exner without Exner. True, it is in color for the first time, but why rename Exner to Marha, rewrite the whole character, and still reference the original novel as source material? It's hard to understand.

New York Stories (1989)

English Weak to extremely weak. Scorsese follows the romance between an artist and his muse in the form of Nick and Rosanna. Coppola gives a chance to his daughter Sofia, who's been toiling away as a screenwriter... and finally, Allen makes another variation on whatever Mia was in (and as a bonus, destroys the comedic talents of Mae Questel). We also get to see a tiny Kirsten Dunst as an extra in the role of Mia’s daughter. Oh, dear. Well, everyone has to start somewhere.

The Treasure of a Byzantine Merchant (1966)

English The first of Erben's Exner projects. It's a film riding on the frivolous mood of light-hearted 60s comedies, starring Gabriela Vránová in a befitting beret and pompom. Vala is sexy, and the other characters are like cut-outs from well-illustrated anecdotes. It could have been a nice film series, but the search for ever new ways to adapt Erben's Captain Exner for the movie theater caused inconsistencies, which in practice resulted in no representative DVD series and only one book with a film cover. Fans who are collectors are therefore disappointed.
