Hellraiser (1987)

English From today's perspective, Hellraiser's effects might be criticized as weaker, but they were of good quality for their time. The concept and execution are commendable, and in terms of direction and acting, this film belongs in the horror hall of fame. Overall impression: 70%. It's a shame that the idea was diluted in later sequels, which squeezed out from the theme even what wasn't there.

The Hexer (2001)

English I can only review the series, but I didn't last longer than eight episodes with it. Undoubtedly, there are much weaker works in the history of film and television in the fantasy genre, but compared to Andrzej Sapkowski's excellent books, the result is rather awkward. The weak screenplay, which also differs from the source in many aspects, unbalanced performances, and a noticeably lower budget couldn't be saved by the well-cast Michał Żebrowski who is also equipped with a very decent acting range, nor by several Polish acting aces who appeared in smaller roles. From such strong material, a much more decent spectacle could have been made, and a much greater mystique could have emanated from it. Overall impression: 35%.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)

English A shallow disposable popcorn movie, which more or less works thanks to the central acting pair and decent, albeit fluctuating, pace. Overall impression: 50%. I don't particularly like Angelina Jolie, but in this case, her glamour was to the benefit of the film, and she was the perfect type for her role. Brad Pitt, on the other hand, shows that his star reputation is justified.

Seventeen Moments of Spring (1973) (series)

English Compared to modern, dynamically shot series, Seventeen Moments of Spring might seem quite outdated today. However, it is one of the few Soviet TV shows that would still withstand stricter criteria and could be broadcast today. It's the most famous role of the renowned actor Vyacheslav Tikhonov, which permanently etched him into viewers' memories. Other famous stars also appeared in smaller roles - for instance, the role of Isayev's boss Schellenberg was played by the illustrious Oleg Tabakov. The series has a slow pace, minimal shooting, and action lovers should steer clear. On the other hand, the quality of the dialogue and the story's atmosphere are commendable. The series became a cult in the Soviet Union, and even today, there are fan websites with countless jokes about the legendary intelligence officer: "Lavrentiy, do you have children?" - "Yes, Comrade Stalin," Beria replies. - "And what about Isayev?" - "He does not." - "That's bad, we must make it happen." Overall rating, considering the nostalgia: 70%.

Captain Ron (1992)

English An uncomplicated comedy that doesn't aim for any higher goals, with its main attraction being Kurt Russell. The film's rating depends on the willingness to accept the childish script, which, as evidenced by the two stars I gave it, I couldn't quite manage. The bloodthirsty Cuban pirates and other scriptwriter's innovations didn't impress me much. However, within the director's created world, everything works as it should. Russell, Martin Short, and ultimately the other actors overact as much as they can, but within this silly context, it just suits their roles. The film is best used as relaxation after demanding mental work. Overall rating: 40%.

Falcons (2002)

English A slow-paced film where the main role is played by the melancholic, sparsely populated landscape of Iceland, which shapes the natures of the local people. The actual plot is insignificant and seemingly deliberately subdued. What is important and attractive to me is the poetic, almost ballad-like atmosphere, highlighted by the performances of both main actors. Margrét Vilhjálmsdóttir is nevertheless slightly more charismatic. Fridrik Thór Fridriksson has made better films, but this is still a piece of honest filmmaking. Overall impression: 70%.

Nowhere in Africa (2001)

English A slow-paced poetic film where shots of the exotic landscape and nature itself play an important role. The intimate acting of the cast, without much flamboyance, portrays the story of a Jewish family that escaped genocide but must cope with a foreign culture, loneliness, poverty, and eventually long-term separation. A strong, intimate piece. Overall impression: 80%.

Men in Black II (2002)

English Men in Black had originality and flair. The sequel tries to maintain a similar style, but what works in it is merely a rehash or imitation of the original. While there are plenty of "jokes," many of them don't land, and others are too cheap. The film doesn't hold together, and only a few successful scenes remain memorable. Overall impression: 40%.

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

English Classic westerns experienced their golden age in the 1940s and 1950s and this film can be considered one of their peaks. It contains all the necessary genre props and elements, and it differs from its genre predecessors with technical improvements - sound, color, and format, as well as a strong cast and meticulous treatment. A treat for genre enthusiasts. The plot is not original, as it is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. As a form, the classic western feels a bit outdated - it never had much in common with the real history of the settlement of the American continent, and I also dislike the stereotypical characters of the usual western scheme. But why not admire all those naive western elements for a moment, such as the lightning-fast drawing of guns, rapid shooting without reloading, or the endless supply of dispatched outlaws from a supposedly forty-member gang, if it is presented in such a finely crafted form? The quality of the music will also leave a lasting impression. Overall impression: 75%.

Cruel Intentions (1999)

English This piece bears all the hallmarks of a cinematic cliché. A fancy exterior with a dumb content, it showcases grand emotions, tragic situations, black-and-white character contrasts, naïve thinking of the main characters, and a pseudo-moral catharsis at the end. This is the fourth film adaptation of "Cruel Intentions" and by far the worst. The depicted film world bears very little resemblance to reality and often comes across as downright ridiculous. The movie tries to lure viewers with beautiful faces, the glamorous world of American high society, stylish clothes, and fast cars. It's suitable for those who want to take a break from Beverly Hills 90210 and crave a hamburgerized classic. Overall impression: 25% for the elegant packaging and Reese Witherspoon.
