Biography
Cinematographer Stanislav Szomolányi is one of the leading figures of Slovak cinema. He studied cinematography at the FAMU Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (1953-58) and he started his professional career at the Documentary Film Studio in Bratislava.
As a cinematographer, he worked with directors Štefan Uher, Ladislav Kudelka, and Jozef Zachar. He spent one year at the Czechoslovak Army Film studios in Prague, after his return he worked on feature films. he achieved the most success with his collaboration with director Štefan Uher. Together they made the documentaries Sometime in November [1958], Through the Eyes of the Camera [1959] and Hurt by Darkness [1959].
Their feature films include the pioneer work of directing and cinematographic originality The Sun in a Net [1962], which was the impulse for the Slovak and Czech New Waves of the 1960s, as well as The Organ [1964], The Wonder-maid [1966], Three Daughters [1967], The Mowing of the Hawk Meadow [1981], She Kept Crying for the Moon [1982] and their last common project, Sixth Sentence [1986].
Szomolányi made similarly significant and international award-winning films. His TV films Gentle Creature [d. Stanislav Barabáš, 1967] and The Ballad of the Seven Hanged [d. Martin Hollý, 1968] won the Grand Prix at the Monte Carlo ITVF. In 1990, Szomolányi founded and headed the Department of Cinematography at the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava.
He received a number of national and international awards. In 2005 he was honoured with the State Prize of Pribina's Cross of 3rd Degree; in 2006 he received The Sun in a Net National Film Award "for his extraordinary contribution to Slovak cinematography". In 2005, the Slovak Film Institute published Richard Blech's monograph entitled Cinematographer Stanislav Szomolányi.
