Armored

A cheap action flick made exactly in the spirit of the rough adventures of John Carpenter or Walter Hill. A bunch of tough guys in a temporal and spatial vacuum don't have time to deal with the logic of the plot but are propelled through the tense moments at an incredible pace, which Antal squeezes from Sekula's deft camerawork and Murphy’s original score. In less than ninety minutes it doesn't stumble once and it's a pleasure to watch the work of a hard-working filmmaker who proves that traditional "guy movies" can still find their place under the sun. The screenplay is pretty bad, but the excellent cast and solid direction raise the quality quite a bit. Antal does his best to save the show and anyway I had lots of fun despite it being complete nonsense (like for example why a guy with a gun doesn’t shoot the hero). Laurence Fishburne literally shines (more roles of this sort for him) and even Matt Dillon is cool in this movie. I rooted for the two of them much more than for the honest idiot with the unpaid mortgage. There ain’t no bad guys. (08/01/2010)
