Though he and his friends have arranged an elaborate Pulp Fiction-themed birthday party for Abed (Danny Pudi), Jeff (Joel McHale) is the one who’s surprised when Abed insists on a grown up dinner at an expensive restaurant for just the two of them. Kudos to the creators for pulling off a pretty consistent season with minimal ups and downs. This episode stayed right in line, and I wasn't impressed — I even found myself zoning out during Abed's never-ending monologue. The saving grace was the awesome masks (the best one was Samuel L. Jackson) and the nods to Pulp Fiction; without those, the episode wouldn't have earned a single star. / Lesson learned: Surprise parties don't have to surprise only the person being celebrated.
