In this sparkling musical adventure, Barbie™ stars as Tori™, the kind-hearted princess of Meribella who would rather sing and dance than perform her royal duties. When her favorite pop star Keira™ visits the kingdom, the girls discover they have much in common, including a magical secret that lets them look like one another. At first, swapping places seems like a great idea, until each girl realizes that the other’s life isn’t as easy as it seems! But Meribella also has a magical secret, and when it’s stolen, the whole kingdom is put in danger. Will true friendship save the day? Filled with fantastic songs, fabulous fashions, and fun new friends, it’s an exciting musical celebration that shows the best thing you can be is yourself. (Universal Pictures UK)

English Barbie: The Princess and The Popstar follows up on Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper perfectly. This is the second adaptation of Twain's "The Prince and the Pauper," and it’s another musical in the series after a long period of time. However, it lacks a fairytale atmosphere and the whole thing is focused only on the basic role reversal of the two main heroines, which simplifies the story a lot. Tori is a princess who would like to relieve herself of her duties and sees herself in the career of her idol, the singer Keira. Little does she know that she too has her troubles and, at the moment, writer's block in writing new hits. It of course works the other way as well, given that Keira would love to be a princess, but she doesn't perceive the ossified etiquette and the golden cage. One new idea is the enchanted garden, in which new pearls are born regularly, and thus there is also the opportunity for cute little fairy gardeners. Otherwise, it's comfortably straightforward and uncomplicated. However, I would appreciate a longer runtime next time and that they develop the plots beyond the main characters. In 2013, we will return to ballet in Barbie in the Pink Shoes and then to Fairytopia in Barbie Mariposa & the Fairy Princess. ()
