Wolfwalkers

This film really made my day. The story was excellently written. On the one hand, it was about the killing of dangerous beasts, on the other, about the English domination of Ireland, which amounted to more or less the same thing. The artwork was great, the voices perfectly suited the individual characters, and it was really entertaining, I had a great time watching this. (10/01/2021)

A Celtic take on Princess Mononoke, which, strangely enough, though it tries to cover too many bases (the clash of civilization with nature, new ways with pagan customs, England's subjugation of Ireland, breaking free from the shackles of tyrannical rules, acceptance of loss, responsibility, folklore, fear of the unknown, and about a hundred other equally serious grand themes) and the emotions are more often than not cheapened, it is still utterly disarming and enchanting in the sheer splendour of it all, and far from just (audio)visually. Compared to Tomm Moore's previous films, Wolfwalkers offers a slightly different animation, which still has that strange and untamed charm. I liked the way the animators dealt with the nuances between the human and animal view of the world, which the film portrays in a truly magical way. Story-wise, it's basically nothing we haven't seen elsewhere before – it reminded me of Pocahontas and Avatar – but it's still a powerful and timeless story, set in the 17th century. Together with the beautiful animation, the film abounds with an unmissable musical score – the theme song "Walking with the Wolves" was amazing. I was perhaps only a little annoyed by the initial behaviour of Robyn and later her father. (06/01/2021)

A fantasy adventure film from Ireland featuring strange creatures that are half wolf and half human living in the woods, and the story of a girl who wants to save the forest, the people and her dad. And last but not least, one of the best films of the year. Wolfwalkers is beautiful to look at, mixing adventure, humour and strong emotions. And it also confirms that Tomm Moore is the best in his field. A wonderful film for all audiences of all ages. (16/12/2020)

In one word: beautiful! Visually, it is simply awesome, especially the way the wolf's sensory perception is portrayed, the magical ending of the movie, the wonderful editing and transitions to widescreen that made the more intense parts so powerful... This was an amazing and spectacular movie, enhanced to pure perfection by the perfect soundtrack! I have probably only one minor criticism regarding this movie, and that is the narrative. Even if I leave aside the fact that after finishing it I was instantly reminded of James Cameron's Avatar, because the basic narrative is similar in many ways, I cannot say that watching Wolfwalkers affected me as strongly as Song of the Sea did. It was a really emotional movie, it had a strong narrative full of suspense and twists (however predictable), however, Tomm Moore did not manage to move and affect me as much as he did in the past. It is a wonderful movie, beautiful and magical, however, I still think that Song of the Sea remains the best movie in Tomm Moore's oeuvre. Still, I am awarding it a much-deserved 9/10. (12/12/2020)
