The Mandalorian - Chapter 1: The Bounty (2019) (episode)

English This hard-hitting western-style snack is a perfect introduction to this world. I have a feeling that some of the scenes are there simply in order for some of the characters to reveal some essential information about the situation in the galaxy. Visually perfect, good music…

For All Mankind - Red Moon (2019) (episode)

English Safety takes a backseat… An interesting premise that could have a lot to offer for the future. The screenwriters created excellent conditions for the space race to never end. So far it looks like a mix between Mad Men and Apollo 13. Kinnaman is solid; his performance as the man who could have been the first to walk on the moon is very convincing. Otherwise, apart from the guy who delivered a speech, nobody says much. The scene with the Soviets landing on the moon is crushing.

The Lion King (2019)

English A beautiful visual aspect and Hans’s faultless, Oscar-winning composition. A remake of one of my favorite kids’ movies with a minimum of changes, which suits me just fine. More action scenes and a little more romping in the perfectly rendered countryside do nothing but good. I liked the voice of James Earl Jones and Seth Rogen is fantastic as Pumba.

Crawl (2019)

English Quentin Tarantino declared Crawl to be his favorite movie this year and I understand why. The simple story of a swimmer/daughter in a flood zone in Florida looking for her dad whom she can’t get in touch with has more to it than it seems at the beginning. Although this tense horror chase movie with a dramatic foundation comprising the dad/daughter relationship turns into a classic B-movie in the end, the heroes aren’t dumb and are played well (with Kaya Scodelario giving an unbelievable performance), and there are abundant bloody surprises.

Mr. Robot - 404 Not Found (2019) (episode)

English The Twin Peaks episode, or Everybody should spend Christmas with their nearest and dearest. A de-populated world (everybody is eating their Christmas dinner), suicidal thoughts. Bad luck and terrifying howling have the main roles here. A series about hackers that takes place in the middle of a snowy forest? Why not?

The King (2019)

English Or how King Henry gained both victory and an honest French lady. A clever and authentic historical movie that gets under your skin. The detailed depiction of the characters and the authenticity of their behavior are crucial for Michôda. There is one major action scene in the form of a muddy scuffle at Agincourt, while the rest of the film is made up of discussions about war with a chubby Edgerton, a bit of sieging and royal intrigues, where Chalamet very adeptly prepares himself for the role of Muad'Dib in Villeneuve’s Dune. Pattinson is a loathsome bastard (the great scene with the little boys in the forest) and absolutely revels in this role. The King looks like a movie from a different time, old-school but with modern techniques and gadgets. It’s nice to hear a mention of the Czech Lands too. Powerful music.

Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)

English A solid action romp and probably to best sequel to Terminator 2, but it still smacks of yesterday’s mashed potatoes with a few added ingredients. In terms of story, it doesn’t bring anything new apart from the mysterious Carl and friendly Grace. The action and the special effects are fantastic, especially in the opening scene. Sarah is a bit too much of a caricature and the rescued girl a bit bland. Miller put together the next sequel that we wanted, but the only thing that it proves is that Cameron did the same, but much better back 1991. It’s raining naked ladies again.

Fargo - Season 1 (2014) (season)

English The successfully dusted-off "authentic" atmosphere of the original is exploited down to the last snowflake. Precisely cast with an excelling Thornton, a beautifully bewildering story, full of strange characters and random dead bodies is a wonderful homage to Coen movies in general. Beautiful music.

City of Violence (2013)

English Definitely never going on holiday to South Africa. A somber, brutal thriller. Excellent acting, great direction. A classic investigation into the death of a white girl turns into a bloodbath combining drug dealing with an ethnic purge. A lot of unpleasant things happen (severing limbs, castration by dog), but the most horrifying is just how calmly the characters accept it all. P.S: From now on Bloom should take only this type of role.

The Guilt Trip (2012)

English A relaxing bite-size snack about how important it is to have a mom. Seth Rogen is freewheeling here, from time to time coming out with a killing joke or an outlandish idea. Him and Barbra Streisand hit it off great together. If I have a daughter, I'm gonna name her Mr. Pickles as well.
